Our environment includes EVERYTHING around us — our surroundings, furniture, art, wall coverings, flooring, space, air, light, temperature, water, design strategies — everything.  At Vera Iconica Architecture we specialize in how environments impact human well-being and the health of the planet.

We define Wellness Architecture™ as the art and practice
of designing
and constructing buildings with a distinct set of principles
to support human well-being and planet health.

Why Wellness Architecture?

Knowing what the materials, products, and finishes in our environments are made of strongly influences our decisions as architects and designers.  Each day more research surfaces about the damaging effects of chemicals found in building materials, furniture, cabinetry, paint, and carpeting.  Luckily, there are plenty of healthy alternatives to choose from for your next project, and we’re here to help guide you.

Knowing how materials and design strategies can positively affect our health and well-being is just as important.  Health isn’t simply the food we put into our bodies and the exercise we get each day or week.  Health is multi-faceted and includes the impact our environments have on our bodies and minds.  Whether at your home or place of work, materials and design strategies can positively or negatively support your well-being.

Do I Need Wellness Architecture?

We all need Wellness Architecture.

Architects are responsible for the health, safety, and welfare of the public. As wellness architects and designers, we replace the word welfare with well-being and take it upon ourselves to educate our office beyond the state and association requirements*.  Couple extensive professional training with respect for craftsmanship and passion for human well-being and planet health, architects can design wellness.

We are continually researching and collaborating to find the truth behind what products are nourishing and life-enhancing — or even regenerative — as opposed to products that are simply less harmful than their predecessors.  Similarly, we understand environmental psychology, the mood and soul of a place, and how thoughtfully designed spaces can have a powerful impact on the inhabitants.

By selecting materials that positively affect stress responses, designing spaces that enhance connections to nature, addressing daylight to support healthy circadian rhythms, and curating moments for the rituals of our client’s daily lives, Vera Iconica Architecture helps clients achieve holistic wellness.

*Licensed architects have extensive training:  5-6 years of formal education, 3+ years of internships, followed by a rigorous, multi-phase licensing exam.  Licensure requires annual continuing education in areas of public health, safety, and welfare.
